Raymond Tariq Spencer is a man of many talents and a testament to resilience and determination. Hailing from East Orange, NJ, Raymond’s journey is one of overcoming adversity, finding his voice, and using his experiences to inspire others.

Growing up in East Orange was more than just a location for Raymond; it was a community that shaped his identity and values. He fondly recalls the sense of camaraderie and discipline instilled by the adults in his life, who acted as additional parental figures.

“Growing up in East Orange was the best,” says Raymond. “We always felt loved, even when we got punished. The grownups disciplined us and then explained why – it was to help us grow and have morals.”

His upbringing also came with challenges. Raymond struggled with identity. He recalled wanting to be like the men in his family that were gangsters at the time. “I sold and used drugs and became addicted to not only the drugs, but the streets and the lifestyle,” says Raymond. After going to prison, Raymond turned his life around. He became stronger and determined more than ever to succeed.

Raymond soon found solace in creative outlets like filmmaking, acting, music, and poetry. These passions led him to pursue a career in the arts, culminating in his roles as a published author and drone pilot.

As a drone pilot, Raymond’s journey took flight during his time at Essex County College, where he purchased his first drone to capture aerial shots for his film projects. Today, he's employed by the city of Newark, and oversees the reservoir for the city’s water.

Raymond’s literary endeavors, including his book "Where We Live," serve as a testament to his commitment to preserving Black history and heritage. Motivated by a desire to counteract the erasure of Black narratives, Raymond’s book offers a poignant reflection on his family's legacy and the importance of reclaiming one's roots. In addition to his published work, Raymond offers a free e-book titled "How To Rebuild Your Life After Prison," reflecting his personal journey of redemption and resilience. Through his writing, Raymond hopes to uplift and empower readers facing similar challenges, offering them a beacon of hope and inspiration.

Whether mentoring youth or using his drones to connect with young people, Raymond’s impact extends far beyond the pages of his books. Raymond’s commitment also extends to mentorship, volunteer work, and a line of T-shirts celebrating East Orange. Looking ahead, Raymond envisions expanding his online businesses and drone service company, further solidifying his legacy as an entrepreneur and advocate for change.

With a supportive family by his side, including his daughter Khamil, who is making significant advancements in supporting black entrepreneurs in Pittsburgh, PA, Raymond’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of leaving a lasting impact on future generations.
